Eagles beat Marlboro in extras, 5-2

It took extra innings but, Middletown South secured their 3rd win with a 5-2 win over Marlboro in nine innings.

Senior Pat Magnotta started on the hill for the Eagles and pitched a gem. He was out there for six and one third innings, allowed only two unearned runs on four hits and two walks while striking out six.

Marlboro got on the board early with one in the bottom of the first, and held that slim margin for three innings. Then, in the fourth, South tied the game on an RBI groundout by senior Will Schnoor. The Eagles got a 2-1 lead when junior Eric Mate drove a run home in the top of the sixth.

Magnotta got the first out of the seventh inning, but then walked a batter. Coach Steve Antonucci lifted Magnotta for senior Brian Dudzinski.

The tying run scored on an infield error, but Dudzinski got out of the inning with out further damage and the score tied at 2-2.

Neither teams scored in their half of the eighth inning but the Eagles were ready to take control of the game in the top of the ninth.

After the first out was recorded, junior Kevin Skirka walked and two batters later Mike Guarnieri singled to put runners on first and second with two outs. Junior Jay Levy doubled in a run, and Eric Mate followed with a two run single, expanding the lead to 5-2.

Dudzinski earned the win after he shut down the Mustangs in the bottom of the ninth. He pitched two and two thirds innings, allowed no hits, no runs and struck out four. Jack Provine also went three for four with a run scored to contribute to the win that improves the Eagles record to 3-12. Marlboro falls to 3-9.
