South Girls drop one at Battle at the Boardwalk

The Middletown South girls basketball team lost 59-49 to Neptune High School in the Battle at the Boardwalk in Asbury Park. The team decided Saturday to play despite a serious head injury to junior Jill Gannon that left her hospitalized. The team wore tape around their wrists, showing Jill's number 5. Jill's older sister, Julie, spent the game on the bench in street clothes while wearing Jill's jersey. Christina Longo scored 13 points to help make the game close at the end, but it was not enough to overcome the Scarlet Fliers. Besides missing Jill and Julie Gannon, Shawna Hagen and Courtney Herring also missed the game with the flu.

Also, a correction from Friday night's post: Jill Gannon suffered her injury while going up for a layup, not a rebound.
